A serious post

This post is going to be far removed from my usual (hopefully) humorous post about little tidbits.

This post is going to be about my health – which is horrible.

Almost 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Diabetes 2. I have yet to tell anyone this (except my mom), I don’t know why, denial or whatever. Yesterday I went to the doctor who said that I have passed the moderate stage of the disease and have entered into the severe stages. I have severe symtpoms such as dehydration and tingling of the hands and feet. She wants to put me on Insulin immediately. I refused, but not because I think I’m invicible but because of the fact that once you go on insulin you rarely come off of it, no matter how much weight I lose, or how much I get my Diabetes under diet control.

So, here is my vow. I vow to actually do something about this. I have been blowing this off for years and have now come to suffer the consequences. Where to begin though? I realize that is a very easy question to answer – diet, and exercise. She set me up with a nutritionist who is again going to give me a very strict low-carb diabetic diet and with a diabetic support group that can help me realize that I will die without changing my eating habits and lifestyle.

I have known that I have had this horrible and life-threatening disease but I have yet to do one damn thing about it… why is that? Granted I was able to lose around 22 pounds but that was short lived. I don’t know why I haven’t taken this seriously. I know I have it, I know what can happen, and yet, I haven’t done anything to lose the weight or exercise more. That thing with Butterfly Life threw me off so much that I haven’t bothered calling another gym. I was going to do weight watchers but it is way too easy to eat too many carbs on that. I know it helps to lose weight but I need to remove my carbs and add more protein at the same time to offset the sugar intake. With WW it “allows” you to eat badly as long as you are within your point range. Not that tons of people don’t lose weight, because they do, but for a diabetic it might not be the best choice for me.

If anyone knows of family or friends or even themselves that have Diabetes 2 I would love any suggestions on diabetic cookbooks or recipe sites that you use.

It is just about damn time I wise up and take action!

  1. Good for you for mustering up the strength, courage, and determination to do what you have to do to stay healthy. Please stick to it because as you know, your life depends on it. I’m going to recommend a blog for you to visit. It’s called blob, and it belongs to my good friend whose screen name is “gekko.” She was very overweight and through diet (Weight Watchers–please reconsider them) and exercise, she lost 60 pounds and feels better than she ever has in her life. Her blog is not only inspirational for anyone trying to get their weight down, it’s also very informative. The very, very best of luck to you.

  2. I am Type 2 and take Avandia daily. I am on the “caveman” diet – no or little carbs. Carbs = sugar! No bread, no pasta, no potatoes or sugars.

Check my cooking blog for starters, but research it well. I think the South Beach diet is also good.

If have no real symptoms except for my blood sugar numbers, which are kept in check by that tiny little pill.

The only upside is that I get compensation from the VA because I was in Vietnam and exposed to Agent Orange. It buys my beer!

  3. Take care of yourself… you are needed! And… you have support! We’re all here for you in every way we can be. I know that diabetes is a real struggle and a huge life change. Be strong and get through it….

My best friends 10 year old daughter is type 2 diabetic and I’ve spent a lot of time with her. She takes insulin a few times a day and watches what she eats but was sad to sday goodbye to milk because it has so much sugar in it. Now, she drinks soy milk and uses lot’s of splenda for everything else.

    Many hugs….

  4. Good for you for getting motivated to take care of this! It’s important to take care of yourself. :)

  5. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. I had a friend with the same issues and she went on a very strict diet and it kept her off of insulin until she wanted to have babies…and then I can’t remember what/how it happened but she took insulin while pg and then for a bit afterwards…I think she eventually got off of it…but I would have to ask her.

    Take care of yourself.

  6. GOOD FOR YOU for coming to terms with this. Diabetes is a dangerous thing.

My husband is diabetic, although he’s Type 1, not Type 2. He’s got juvenile diabetes. He’s doing very well with it, but is insulin dependent.

My only advice, but I think you’ve already figured it out on your own. DON’T LET THIS GO ANY LONGER

We’ll all be here to support you, cheer you on, lend a hand, offer a shoulder to cry on. YOU CAN DO THIS!

  7. I don’t know about the disease first hand or what kind of diet to do but what I know is that you have to do something to take care of it, or control it as much as possible. I’m going to try and ask you often for an update on this. Take care of yourself for Matthew.
